The Mankind Series: Big Boy

Big Boy

Mankind got in touch and asked if I’d like to sample a few new products that they have available on their website. Today is another part in this series which features Big Boy.

Big Boy

Drawing inspiration from its Sicilian origins, BIG BOY products combine rich, natural ingredients like Sicilian olive and almond oil, beeswax and shea oil to create superior skin and hair care products that work in harmony with the skin’s natural elements. Andrius and Massimiliano, co-founders of BIG BOY, the luxury male grooming brand originated in Sicily. Both Andrius and Massimiliano were inspired by hairdressing and grooming from a young age, their passion for the industry drove them to excel in their own fields, developing extensive knowledge and of the sector. After meeting in Dubai and becoming close friends, with a combined breadth of experience and creativity, this power duo was able to turn a vision of their very own grooming line into a reality with the creation of BIG BOY. Massimiliano Luca Comella – Massimiliano’s passion for hairdressing began in

Massimiliano Luca Comella – Massimiliano’s passion for hairdressing began in a traditional family run barber shop in the heart of Palermo, Sicily. Massimiliano’s love for the industry took him to London in 2000 where he trained at the TONI&GUY Academy, further cementing his love of fashion, hair, innovation and creativity. The world of hairdressing also took Massimiliano to Dubai where he soon became a top hairstylist, boasting an impressive celebrity clientele including Gerard Butler, Tom Ford and Louis Vuitton.

From the age 17, Andrius was hugely inspired by the hairdressing industry and this passion took him to the UK where he became a barber at his local TONI&GUY Salon. Training twice a week, Andrius’ passion grew and he soon developed his skills enabling him to get his diploma from the Central London Academy. Two years later Andrius moved to Dubai and met Massimiliano who shared his love of the industry. After further expanding his expertise in Dubai, Andrius established his own salon back in London. It was not until a later trip to Dubai in 2015 where himself and Massimiliano came up with the idea of owning their own luxury grooming range, and so BIG BOY was born!

Shaving Gel

I began this journey with the Big Boy shaving gel which is said to transform the chore of shaving into something enjoyable. The packaging is rather simple and what would be expected of a gel container, however, I am a fan of the logo and made in Sicily aspect. The smell is definitely unique but something I would probably expect a shaving gel to smell like, I think the Aloe gel is contributing to this sensation. When applied it feel rather cooling and didn’t irritate my skin! After the shave, the skin underneath felt somewhat hydrated and – for lack of a better word – clean, which I’d put down to the soothing ingredients inside. The price of this product is £19.95, which I find is quite steep compared to other products on the market, yet it does a job in hydrating the skin and leaving it feeling super fresh.

Moisturising Cream

This Big Boy delicate facial cream was next up on my list. It’s said to tick all the right boxes thanks to its unique formula which contains, among others: long term olive oil extract, Argan oil, Vitamin E, and Squalene Plant. The packaging of this product is a strong glass tub which I wouldn’t usually expect from a moisturiser, it feels very solid and definitely not cheap. The consistency is a tough one to explain, if I put it on a scale of 1 being smooth and 10 being thick, I’d mark it a 4 out of 10. Not super smooth but definitely something in there to thicken it up. Because of this consistency, it feels rather dry when applied to the face (which isn’t what I’d usually go for), I prefer a more hydrating, smoother moisturiser. The great points surrounding this product are it soothes the damage caused by the most common skin irritations, the cream consists of SPF 20, which works as a sunscreen reducing skin ageing caused by extended periods of the sun which is a key factor in skin ageing. The price is £36.95 for a 50ml bottle, which again is rather steep for the product.

Soothing Drops

Last, but by no means least is most probably my favourite product by Big Boy, which were the Soothing Drops. This is the ideal treatment for skin under the beard and as an aftershave. Anyone with a beard (like me) knows how it can be rather difficult to clean, cleanse and treat the skin underneath. I like the feel of these drops and the ingredients mentioned really do seem to relieve your skin of any irritation, containing Calendula extract which is considered to be a natural remedy against skin irritation in many countries. Also, contains Argan and Sweet Almond Oils, produced in small batches in an artisan laboratory in Sicily. The pipette dropper really does help to improve delivery of the drops to the skin under the beard. This product is priced at £24.95, which again is rather high. However, due to the production in Sicily and the results of the product – for me – makes it JUST worthwhile.

Thank you very much for reading and thanks to Big Boy & Mankind for this product to review. Keep and eye out in the near future as we’ll have another instalment for The Mankind Series. For the previous instalment of this series, click the link below.
